Alpha Response
The creator of Counter-Strike made an arcade cop shooter, and its chaotic 4-player co-op is a genuine blast — you just have to accept the Early Access rough edges.

There’s a name on this one that instantly earns your attention: Gooseman — Minh Le — the co-creator of the original Counter-Strike. Nearly three decades after that mod reshaped online shooters, he’s back with Alpha Response, and it’s nothing like the tense, methodical CS you might expect. This is loud, fast, arcade-flavored police action — and when it’s firing on all cylinders, it’s one of the most purely fun shooters on Steam.
Virtua Cop, all grown up
Alpha Response openly wears its 90s arcade influences — Virtua Cop, Time Crisis — on its sleeve. You’re elite police responding to hostage situations, bomb threats, VIP escorts and robberies across two big, detailed maps, and the firefights are pure spectacle. Enemies pour in by vehicle and on foot, spawning differently every run, so a mission you’ve cleared before can still surprise you. Dodging between cars to pop a gunman, whipping a baton across a room, reviving a downed teammate mid-shootout — it captures that blockbuster cop-show energy critics have raved about, with Vice calling it “pure cinema” and PCGamesN going as far as best-shooter-of-the-year territory.
The moment-to-moment gunplay is a riot, and the arcade pacing means you’re never waiting long for the next rush.
Co-op is the main event
Solo is fine, but Alpha Response comes alive with four players. Coordinating a breach, calling out a helicopter gunship, scrambling to protect civilians while bullets scream across the screen — it’s chaotic in all the right ways, and the variety of threats (attack dogs, flying drones, armored vehicles, choppers) keeps a full squad on its toes. This is a game built to be played with friends and a headset.
The Early Access asterisk
Here’s the honest part. Alpha Response has been in Early Access since October 2024 and is only now targeting a full 1.0 in Q3 2026. It shows. Performance can dip, bugs surface, there’s still no controller support, and it’s English-only. The content, while fun, is on the lean side — two maps and around forty missions — with big roadmap promises (more missions, ray tracing, and crucially, AI squadmates so solo players can command a team) still in progress. Playing alone right now, without those AI teammates, is a noticeably thinner experience. The Steam consensus reflects all of this fairly: Mostly Positive, around 78% of 800 reviews — people love the core, but the rough edges temper it.
Verdict
Alpha Response is a hugely likeable, unmistakably arcade shooter with real pedigree behind it, and its co-op is the kind of thing that turns a quiet evening into a highlight reel. At $19.99 it’s an easy shout if you’ve got friends to play with and can roll with Early Access jank. If you’re mostly a solo player or want a fully polished, feature-complete package, wishlist it and check back when 1.0 lands — the foundation is more than strong enough to be worth the wait.
